“Alumínio Roots brought the house down at two festivals, headlining the Summer Tyne Festival at Sage Gateshead on the Sunday, after also headlining on the Saturday at Mouth of the Tyne Festival”
(July 2007)
Alumínio Roots grew up amid the samba & reggae drums of Pelourinho, Salvador’s cultural and historical centre. Inspired by the hypnotic power of Afro-Brazilian and Nyabinghi rhythms, he developed as musician-singer-songwriter, inspired by his life experiences and spiritual connection.
1992 - founder/drummer/percussionist in reggae band Bem-Aventurados, performing in various cities around North East Brazil.
2001 - launched own band Carruagem de Fogo (Chariot of Fire) as singer/songwriter, promoting regular Friday night events in the Rocinha of Pelourinho which attracted thousands of people every month over a period of seven years. This unique, independent movement united musical talents in reggae, rap, capoeira and hip-hop, and generated exchange between artists and people from all tribes. It attracted media from Brazil, USA, Jamaica, Britain, Italy and Japan, and transformed the ghetto into an important local and global cultural point, recognised throughout Brazil. Alumínio became renowned in Brazil’s reggae scenario and the Rocinha - the “Reggae Channel of Bahia”. Learn more - Rocinha Reggae Movement
2004 - ambassador for social politics through reggae, Alumínio has always embraced the fight for social and cultural inclusion, via leadership of the Rocinha Reggae Movement, promotion of local talent and of community socio-cultural activity. He was delegate at 1st National Conference on Culture in Brasília, with recital in the Planalto. His song lyrics are also quoted in the UN’s National Report on “Rights to Housing”, presented to Brazil's president, Lula.
2007 - began his solo international career, performing at venues and festivals in Britain and working alongside top musicians in the region. Alumínio continues performing regularly in Brazil with some of the best reggae musicians in Bahia.
2011 – launches new CD “Reggae pra Todas as Tribos/ Reggae for All Tribes”. Recorded in Salvador, the Rastaman brings messages of respect, obedience, praise and love, including favourites and new songs. Alumínio Roots tours again in Britain, a success at summer festivals and venues around the country. Alumínio Roots & Carruagem de Fogo currently continue performing on the Brazilian summer circuit.
